Exploring Oman’s Cultural Heritage on World Heritage Day

As the world celebrates World Heritage Day on April 18th, the Sultanate of Oman shines a spotlight on its rich cultural heritage, inviting visitors to delve into the nation’s ancient roots and historical treasures. This year’s theme, “Discover and Experience Diversity,” aligns perfectly with Oman’s commitment to showcasing its historical and archaeological sites as authentic components of cultural tourism.

Eng. Ibrahim bin Saeed Al Kharousi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Heritage, underscores the importance of World Heritage Day in fostering global understanding and cultural interaction. Through exhibitions, educational workshops, and practical experiences, Oman aims to enhance awareness of the significance of its heritage and encourage active participation in its preservation.

With approximately 36,000 registered archaeological sites and 3,525 historical monuments, Oman boasts a wealth of cultural treasures that span centuries. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s efforts in documenting, restoring, and promoting these sites not only safeguard Oman’s heritage but also contribute to the nation’s economic growth and identity.

World Heritage Day serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to protect and preserve humanity’s cultural legacy—a responsibility that Oman embraces wholeheartedly as it continues to cherish and celebrate its rich heritage for generations to come.
