In a remarkable testament to Oman’s cultural heritage, more than 15,935 tourists from diverse backgrounds have flocked to the historic castles and forts nestled within Al Batinah South Governorate during the first half of this year.
Dr. Al-Mutassim bin Nasser Al-Hilali, the Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Al Batinah South Governorate, proudly announced this surge in tourism. He highlighted that the governorate is home to an impressive array of 11 castles and 46 forts, each with a unique historical significance.
One of the standout achievements this year was the completion of the restoration of Nakhal Fort in March 2023, which is now open for private sector investment. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to restore Al-Rustaq Fort, ensuring that these historical gems are preserved for generations to come.
Moreover, Al-Hazm Fort has also undergone extensive restoration and maintenance, opening the doors for potential investment opportunities. The revitalization efforts extend to other iconic landmarks, such as Barka Fort and Al-Mansour Fort. These initiatives are part of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s commitment to revitalizing and preserving historical monuments across the Sultanate of Oman.
Al-Hilali emphasized that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is dedicated to facilitating the restoration and maintenance of these historical treasures, creating opportunities for investment by small and medium-sized enterprises and specialized companies in the management of castles and forts. The goal is to promote these heritage sites both within and beyond Oman’s borders, ultimately fostering economic growth and providing job opportunities for the nation’s citizens.
As a significant step in this direction, contracts have already been inked for the utilization of Nakhal Investment Fort by Nakhal National Company and the Sur and Al Khamis Tower in the Wilayat of Musanna by Hisn Al-Khairat Company. These partnerships promise to further enhance the tourism experience and promote Oman’s rich history to the world.
